Three days after the simultaneous earthquake drills around the Philippines in congruence to the National Disaster Awareness Month, an Intensity 3 tremor originating from a Magnitude 5 earthquake in Davao Oriental shocked Ateneo de Davao University and Davao City.
The earthquake started during 2:40PM, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), with students, faculty, and staff of the college and Senior High School simultaneously evacuating themselves to the various assembly points within and outside the university.
The evacuation lasted for fifteen minutes until the university decided that it was already secure to re-enter the school buildings.
No casualties nor damage were incurred by the earthquake in its affected areas.
PHIVOLCS indicated in its bulletin that the earthquake’s epicenter was located 48 kilometers southeast of Governor Generoso, Davao Oriental and was tectonic of origin, with a depth of 51 kilometers.
Intensity 4 was felt in the said town as well as in Mati City while Intensity 3 was recorded in Kidapawan City and Alabel, Sarangani.
